Swimming pool or natural swimming pond which is also called eco-reservoir?
Once I worked at one customer who had a big swimming pool. But in spite of this he decided to make an artificial lake at the same area. And despite the fact that the swimming pool was intended for bathing he ordered one more pond, eco-reservoir for swimming.
From the first minutes of our acquaintance it was very interesting to figure exactly this fact out and to compare these two types of reservoirs. And first thing he started with was the complaints about the upkeep of the swimming pool. The main problem of such swimming pool is quick pollution of the water and the pool walls.
Companies which service swimming pools earn great money only by servicing. Nearly every week they have to come, to clean the swimming pool walls, to monitor the water quality, sometimes to unclog filters, to add some chemicals to the dosing pumps. Well, altogether a lot of work must be done in order to make this system up and running. It’s also totally clear that rather expensive equipment was installed before that.
The costs of the swimming pool are not low, of course, but it doesn’t mean that the pool needs less attention.
If the swimming pool is open, so some leaves, dust and dirt perhaps can get on the water smooth surface. Even if the skimmer systems work, it’s naturally that they must be cleaned. If dirt is heavy and it goes down to the bottom, sand filters become clogged quickly once again, as well as bottom filters. In order to afford a swimming pool the person must have not only money, but he also should be patient to see routinely people who work outdoors and who constantly fuss around the swimming pool.
Besides, there can be problems with wintering usage. If the swimming pool freezes up, you have to think of such a way of keeping the pool in winter when ice won’t break the pool basin. Otherwise before that you had to cast heavy-duty reinforced-concrete pool basin which doesn’t suffer from thermal expansion of water, i.e. ice. But this pool basin really needs a great factor of safety in order to persist through wintering without water draining. If the pool basin suddenly cracks it can’t be fixed again. That means it must be made a new one.
These are not all problems concerned with the swimming pool. The presence of chemicals in the water, the lack of shallow water zone protecting little children from falling into the water, static architecture (the pool doesn’t change from year to year).
How much better is a natural pool or a natural swimming pond! It’s quite another thing. The servicing is minimal. It’s clear that you must be ready to see some build up on the stones – it’s an absolutely natural occurrence. But at the same time you bathe in absolutely lively and natural swimming pond. The water is transparent to the bottom and you can see every stone on it. Is it comfortable for you to see the weeds on the stones when you bathe in the sea? Seaweeds are the part of the biosystem, they are some kind of natural filters. So if you are fond of natural environment and clean water in your pond (with transparency of 1,5 – 2 meters) all year round, the natural pool would be rather interesting variant for you. In this reservoir you can make a sand beach with flowing entering the water.
Eco-reservoir (natural pool) means close proximity to nature because the cleaning systems in this reservoir are connected with exclusive biological process. In other words, those pollutants which get into the water are processed by billions of bacteria and split into absolutely harmless carbon compounds, water, oxygen, nitrogen which are the component parts of the water and our atmosphere. Such pool practically doesn’t require the servicing. It consumes less electric power compared with the swimming pool.
Pool basins for such reservoirs are usually made of polymer materials which are hidden under the setting of large natural stone boulders. These polymer materials keep the elastic properties of the pool basin. The membrane which has a very high expansion rating can withstand any weather.
You can create a unique natural design of such reservoirs. This natural design of the pool can always blend with the architecture of any style.
Therefore the natural pool becomes the part of your garden. The plants which grow at the waterside of such pool and on its shallow areas go on their growing along with the other garden plants. The water in such reservoir is absolutely clean, so people can practically drink it.
The servicing of a natural pool like that really takes you much less time. If there’s a wish to clean a stone you can drain a little water and wash down some part of the green seaweeds from the pool ledges or from the nearest underwater areas. But it’s not necessary to do this, because the underwater plants don’t pollute the water anyhow.
Can you keep the fish in such pools? Yes, but it’s not a very good idea. The presence of fish in such reservoir pollutes water much more quickly and you need to use more powerful biological cleaning systems. If you have a wish to keep fish there can be created another extra little pond next to the swimming area. In that case you will be able not only to bathe, but also enjoy your watching the fish while walking along the pond shore. And you practically don’t need to feed the fish. It can be fed only if you want to tame it.
After building the eco-reservoir (natural pool) my customer had his old swimming pool dismantled.
So, if you have to make a choice between a common classical swimming pool and a natural pool, think about it!
In case you have some questions, do not hesitate to ask me. I will answer all you questions and will pay great attention to help you to come to a right decision.
Yoursrespectfully, Konstantin Yudin.
